The Mill Coffee Shop

😍 Bromham is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Bedford in Bedfordshire, England, situated around 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Bedford town centre with the Great River Ouse running through it.

I've been really wanting to visit The Mill Coffee Shop in Bromham for ages, it looks so beautiful in the photos I've seen as its situated right next to the river. We got there a little late for food but explored the grounds anyway.

The Mill Coffee Shop

🛝 WHAT WE LOVED
Tucked away like a hidden gem, this riverside spot stole our hearts. Just steps from the water, we found a peaceful escape complete with a spacious field and a charming play park with benches. The meandering riverside paths held within the grounds felt like we had our own secret slice of nature. You could even take a blanket with you as the field area is quite big. While we were there we saw a couple working on their laptops, what a great location to work outdoors!
The play area

🧚‍♀️A SURPRISE
Just when we thought the day couldn’t get any dreamier, we stumbled into a woodland walk straight out of a storybook. Fairy doors peeked through the leaves, an enchanting hideaway featuring still creatures for curious little explorers.

We couldn’t help but imagine how magical it must look after dusk when the lights truly come alive. To find this whimsical wonderland, simply head to the Mill car park—take a left into the woods, and let your adventure begin. Trust us, your inner child will thank you.

🤪 When Dinosaurs, Ball Pits & Pub Crawls Collide: A Very Grown-Up Night at Gulliver’s Land in Milton Keynes! We paid only £48 for one night!

Get booked with Hotels.com

🦖 PLOT TWIST
I booked our anniversary stay at Gulliver’s Land in Milton Keynes literally last minute at 4pm and arrived at 6:30pm. Yes, that Gulliver’s — the one teeming with dinosaurs and toddlers in Crocs. Not exactly Paris, but guess what? We had an absolute blast!

This wasn’t your average romantic weekend. It was part wild west, part chaotic kids' and romantic a setting but somehow still one of the best nights we’ve had in ages.

🙈 WHAT WE DID....
What we actually got up to (No regrets. Mostly.)

🤠 Shacked up in a Western-style cabin — and we bagged the only kind of cabin's with a TV. Yee-haw and thank you very much.
🥂 Embarked on a global pub crawl… within the park’s themed areas. Because nothing says romance like pretending you’re in Africa while holding a gin in Milton Keynes.
⛺️ Discovered an empty bell tent. Naturally, we moved in (for one drink only… or three). Luckily, nobody sleeping in there, we double checked.
🍽 Dined at Warbler on the Wharf — genuinely a lovely spot overlooking the marina. It gave posh vibes without the posh prices. Click here to view the website.
🤸‍♂️Snuck into the ball pit. Not sure it was allowed. Definitely worth it.
🚣‍♀️ Drinks on a boat. Should we have been there? Unclear. Were we channeling our midlife crisis? Absolutely!

🤑 BOOKING HACK...
Because Full Price? Nah.
The Gulliver’s Land website was playing hardball with the prices, so we sidestepped and booked via Expedia (also check Hotels.com — they’ve got listings too). Bit of a win considering we spent the savings on cocktails and fries.

💯 THE VERDICT
If you’re craving something different — and don’t mind sleeping near a T-Rex — this place is weirdly perfect for a one- or two-night break. Kids will love it. Grown-ups might love it even more, especially if you’re not above climbing into a ball pit or getting locked in a cage in your 30s (or 40s… or whatever, age is fake). And no, we didn’t camp like we could of, we needed a real toilet and zero effort. Priorities!

🌿 Discover Ashwell: A Hidden Gem in North Hertfordshire.

Just approximately 15 minites drive from Biggleswade, tucked away in the postcard-perfect village of Ashwell lies a little slice of history, nature, and charm that makes for a delightful day out. Whether you're dipping your toes in the refreshing springs, exploring centuries of local lore, or enjoying a pub lunch in the sunshine—Ashwell has something for everyone. Nestled at one of the sources of the River Cam, this little gem is a dream to wander through.

ASHWELL VILLAGE GARDENS

💦 ASHWELL SPRINGS:
Nature’s Playground. Just steps from the heart of the village, the Ashwell Springs invite visitors to kick off their shoes and paddle in crystal-clear waters. It’s a peaceful, magical spot perfect for cooling off on a warm afternoon. Crystal Waters & Stepping Stones, the Springs are shallow, fresh, and wonderfully clear — ideal for paddling or sitting back while dogs, kids, and grown-ups alike embrace the cold splash. There’s a Peak District feel here, especially with those characterful stepping stones. It’s not hard to imagine this spot buzzing in summer, so do arrive early to scout out the perfect picnic patch!

ASHWELL SPRINGS

🐟 Pond-Dipping Surprises
Nature put on quite a show — a child reeled in a tiny European Bullhead, and we netted a few silvery Sticklebacks (all gently returned to their watery home). It’s hands-on wildlife at its most charming.

FISHING IN THE SPRINGS

📌 GETTING TO THE SPRINGS
We parked for free on the High Street, right beside The Three Tuns pub — just a few steps from the steps leading directly to the Springs.

🏛 ASHWELL MUSEUM (FREE)
Open Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 2:30–5pm (free entry, donations welcome), the Ashwell Village Museum is a treasure trove of stories. Housed in a Grade II listed Tudor building, this former tailor’s shop and schoolhouse now charts Ashwell’s journey from the Stone Age to the present day—through curious artefacts, local tales, and rich heritage.
The museum is paired perfectly with tea and homemade cakes across the way in the church hall.

🔒 THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE LOCK-UP
Tucked somewhere in the village is one of Hertfordshire’s last remaining 19th-century lock-ups. Built in 1800 with salvaged church stone, it once held local mischief-makers overnight. The most famous story? Amos Pammenter, who tunneled his way out and simply went home to bed. Legendary.

🍻 WHERE TO REFUEL....
You’ll find cosy pubs like The Three Tuns, complete with a family-friendly play area and located just a stone’s throw from the Springs. The Three Tuns is also a hotel, perfect if you wanted a romantic or peaceful night away!

🌳 Our adventure to Bromham Lakes Nature Reserve began with a long road that seemed to stretch into nowhere. For a moment, we wondered if we were heading toward a hidden gem—or just a dead end! But then after parking, the trees opened up, and the quiet beauty of the reserve revealed itself.

ℹ️ ABOUT BROMHAM LAKES NATURE RESERVE

Once a landscape shaped by mineral workings, this 25-acre reserve has undergone a remarkable transformation. In the 1980s, vibrant wildflower meadows and thriving woodlands were carefully planted, setting the stage for nature to reclaim the space. Today, the site flourishes freely, evolving into a haven for wildlife and a serene escape for visitors. In 1991, it was officially designated a Local Nature Reserve, ensuring its protection as a cherished sanctuary of natural beauty.

🛤 A small part of the walk runs alongside a railway track.

🤔 THE CATCH...
But here’s the catch—you won’t be strolling along the lake’s edge like in a picture-perfect postcard. Instead, the water lies just out of reach, slightly below ground level, shielded by a natural barrier of trees and shrubs. You can see it shimmering between the branches, but don’t expect to dip your toes in or sit beside it with a picnic. The lake is there for glimpses, not for communion—a secret sanctuary where nature, rather than humans, reigns. However you will find grassed areas  fine for a picnic. We only saw 4 people in total on our walk. You may see a few bunnies hopping around like we did.

🚶‍♂️HOW LONG DOES THE WALK TAKE?
While exploring, you might stumble across a couple of dead ends, or off routes into trees or bushes, but don’t let them stop you! If you take your time to absorb the surroundings, walking the full circuit takes around 45 minutes - hour—perfect for a peaceful escape. The circular walk users the same entry and exit route.

♿️ ACCESSIBILITY
Due to uneven terrain and a few steps along the way, this isn’t a wheelchair-friendly walk. Sturdy shoes and a sense of adventure are recommended! Bench seating is sparse also.

🅿️ PARKING
No designated car park here—just a free layby at the end of a quiet road. It may feel like an isolated spot, but that only adds to the charm of the visit!

✅️ Quiet area
✅️ Scenic
✅️ Birds & wildlife
✅️ Great for dog walking

🦆We had the pleasure of exploring Clophill Lakes Nature Reserve on the very day it opened to the public—5th April 2025. It is open 9am – 5pm, 7 days a week.

🏞 WHAT WE LOVED
The walking route consists of well-maintained gravel and grass paths, offering a serene journey around the lakes. The gentle-paced walk around the stunning lakes took around 45 minutes, providing a perfect mix of relaxation and nature immersion. Wandering through this tranquil setting, charming wooden bridges, surrounded by glistening waters and chirping wildlife, felt like a breath of fresh air.

🪑 LOOKING FORWARD TO...
One thing we noticed—there are no benches around the lakes yet, making it a challenge for those who need a rest during their walk. While we managed the route just fine, having dedicated seating would make this reserve even more accessible. If you’re visiting soon, consider bringing a blanket to sit by the lakeside and soak in the scenery.
🗣️ The Green Trust has confirmed benches will be added in the future, but when we visited in April 2025, funding was still in progress. We’re excited to see how the space evolves to be even more visitor-friendly!

🛝 PLAY PARK
Nestled near the lakes and leading into a nearby residential area is a small play park, a fun addition for families. However, when we visited in April 2025, it was still closed, with no confirmed opening date yet.

☕️ THE CAFÉ (open 10am to 3pm daily)
A welcome retreat after a lakeside stroll—the café is a delightful spot to grab a drink, treat yourself to some ice cream or cake, and unwind at the seating area outside or indoors. Toilets, including accessible facilities, are available, making it a convenient stop during your visit.

🏰 CLOPHILL & CAINHOE CASTLE HISTORY
History lovers will appreciate the fascinating story of Cainhoe Castle, visible in the distance as a grassy mound near the lakes. Clophill itself has deep historical roots, with evidence of a Roman road running through the village.

📜 In the Domesday Book of 1086, Clophill was recorded as Clopelle, meaning tree-stump hill. Cainhoe Castle was once an impressive motte and bailey fortification from the late 11th or early 12th century. Tragically, during the Black Death, the castle and its surrounding village were abandoned, as the population succumbed to the devastating plague. By 1374, the castle had fallen into ruins and was never rebuilt. Today, only its turf-covered mound and historic earthwork banks remain, serving as silent echoes of its medieval past.

🔎 WHAT HAS BEEN DISCOVERED HERE?
Archaeological finds have uncovered intriguing relics of the past, including:
⭐️ The Rondel Dagger
⭐️ Wooden Stakes
⭐️ Pottery Fragments
⭐️ Flints
⭐️ Horse Shoes

Each item tells a piece of the untold stories buried beneath the soil, giving us glimpses into the lives of those who once walked these lands.

🅿️ THE CAR PARK

🅿️ PARKING CHARGES:
▪️0-3 hours: £3.50

🚶Want to save on parking?
You can park for free in the village and take a short scenic walk down to the nature reserve instead!

😍 Discover the Charm of Buckingham
nestled in lush greenery. Buckingham is a picturesque town where history and nature blend seamlessly. With the tranquil River Great Ouse weaving through, it’s a haven for those eager to explore rich heritage, unwind in scenic parks with benches dotted around, or let children burn off their endless energy at the play parks it offers. Whether you're a history buff or simply seeking a peaceful escape for a picnic or walk, Buckingham has something for everyone.

😌 A TOWN WITH CHARACTER
Wander through the heart of Buckingham and you'll find cozy cafés, delightful restaurants, and bustling charity shops. Among its historical gems stands the Old Buckingham Gaol, a fascinating museum that whispers tales of the town’s past. Just beyond the park, you’ll stumble upon the mysterious Flosh, an intriguing landmark connected to Buckingham’s milling history.

🔐 THE OLD GAOL
A Glimpse into Buckingham’s Dark Past.
Built in 1748, the Old Gaol was Buckingham’s answer to a growing problem—where to safely detain criminals. Before its construction, the town relied on a temporary lock-up after the original castle gaol burned down in the Second Great Fire of Buckingham (1725).

Security was so poor that, in 1743, authorities feared a dramatic jailbreak. A convicted murderer, George Sansbury, faced immediate execution to prevent his accomplices from springing him from custody! Today, the Old Gaol Museum stands as a testament to this gripping history, offering visitors a journey into Buckingham’s turbulent past.

Overlooking the water, Hunter Street leads towards Buckingham University, where the past and present intertwine. If you enjoy discovering unique locations rich in history, this is one stop you won’t want to miss. Why not cool your feet in these clear waters, although small but beautiful  location.

With panoramic views of The Needles, Isle of Wight, this peaceful seaside retreat felt like an unspoiled treasure. Milford on Sea, is a large coastal village and civil parish in the New Forest district, on the Hampshire coast, England, centred about 3 miles south of Lymington.

If you prefer a quieter, less touristy escape, this is the perfect spot! The pristine, stony beachfront was a dream, offering a refreshing coastal breeze and tranquil surroundings, not to mention the castle and light house.

🏰 HURST CASTLE - ENGLISH HERITAGE
🛥 TWO WAYS TO GET THERE, BOAT OR WALK?

Adventure called, and we set off for the castle—an English Heritage site where members enter free. You have two ways to reach it: take the two mile rugged yet scenic stone sea walk or hop on a boat. We opted for the exhilarating half-hour walk on the way there, soaking in the sea air before sailing back for just £5.50pp. A cafe outside the Castle awaits those who venture here.

📖 THE HISTORY OF HURST CASTLE
The castle is maintained by a fourth generation of a local family who also operates the ferry service.

Perched dramatically on the narrow Hurst Spit in Hampshire, Hurst Castle stands as a formidable relic of England’s turbulent past. Constructed between 1541 and 1544 by King Henry VIII, this mighty artillery fort was a crucial link in his ambitious coastal defence system, known as the Device Forts—a network designed to shield England from the looming threats of France and the Holy Roman Empire.

Today, its weathered stone walls whisper tales of Tudor power, military ingenuity, and centuries of coastal defense.

🏡The Panacea Museum is a free beautiful Victorian House to visit in Bedford. Discovering the amazing story of the unique religious community that created its own beautifull Garden of Eden in the centre. A very interesting museum if you haven't visited before. They also have a tea room.

📖 SOME INTERESTING HISTORY ...
The Panacea Society, originally called ‘The Community of the Holy Ghost,’ was a mostly female religious group led by Mabel Barltrop, known as ‘Octavia.’ In the 1920s, followers moved to Bedford to live near her, creating a private communal space known as ‘the campus,’ with a central chapel.

Operating from Bedford, the Society gained over 2,000 members worldwide, including in Europe, North America, and the British Empire. Members believed in an impending new age—‘the Millennium’—and saw Octavia as part of a prophetic lineage dating back to the late 1700s, a tradition called ‘the Visitation.’
